40 Miles Was Completely Worth It
When my son came home for spring break, my husband had one request: Asian food. Now, if you know the Sarasota dining scene the way I do, you know we love it — but when it comes to elevated Asian cuisine, the options thin out fast. I searched and searched, scrolled through every review I could find in our area, and nothing quite called to me. So I did what any determined food lover would do: I looked further.
That’s how we ended up making a reservation at Hales Blackbrick in Hyde Park, Tampa — a solid 40 miles from home. And honestly? I’d drive it again without a second thought.
One note before we dive in: I booked our table only the day before, so the only slot I could get was 5:30 PM. We were literally there when the doors opened. If you’re planning a visit, book ahead — this place fills up fast, and for very good reason.
THE VIBE: MOODY, BEAUTIFUL, UNEXPECTED

Walking into Hales Blackbrick feels like stepping into a world that’s been very intentionally curated. The lighting is dim and atmospheric, the kind that makes everyone look their best — and the neon signs scattered throughout the room glow in just the right way. There’s a gorgeous chandelier that anchors the space, and the skulls on the pillars? A striking, edgy touch that somehow works perfectly. It’s theatrical without being over the top — cool without trying too hard.

This is Chef Richard Hales’ house, and you feel his personality everywhere. A Tampa native who spent 25 years mastering Asian cuisine across the U.S., Europe, and Asia — and was famously praised by Guy Fieri on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — Chef Hales returned to his hometown and brought back something extraordinary. The restaurant has already won Best New Restaurant and Best Chinese Restaurant from Tampa Magazine, and it’s easy to see why.
THE FOOD: WHERE TO BEGIN
We started with cocktails — the mezcal cocktail was a decent opener. Not mind-blowing, but a solid pour. Thankfully, the food that followed left absolutely no room for disappointment.

CHAR SIU PORK BELLY ⭐ Standout Appetizer
Seared tableside right in front of you — fatty, impossibly tender, and finished with a sauce that hit every note. Dramatic presentation, even better flavor.
GENERAL TSO’S FLORIDA GATOR — Must Order
The most Florida thing on the menu — and one of the best things we ate. Light sauce, salty meat, and a satisfying crunch in every bite. Playful and delicious.

YANGZHOU FRIED RICE — Family Favorite
This is my son’s go-to dish — we always order it at Lao Szechuan back home. Hales’ version is its own thing, but we loved it just as much. Comforting and well-executed.

DAN DAN NOODLES — Spice Lovers
Bold, deeply spiced, and exactly what a Dan Dan should be. As a family that grew up eating Indian food, we were very comfortable with this level of heat — and we loved it.
XI’AN LAMB PAPPARDELLE — Spice Lovers
Rich, spicy, and deeply satisfying. A beautiful marriage of Chinese technique and European pasta. Go in ready for heat — it’s the good kind.

PANANG DUCK CURRY ⭐ Best Dish of the Night

This was the unanimous winner of the evening. The sauce — a perfectly balanced blend of coconut and cream — was pure magic. The duck was cooked beautifully. I’m still thinking about it.
We finished the night with the Cookie Butter Banana Pie, which was a lovely, sweet close to an already outstanding meal. Not revolutionary, but exactly the kind of dessert that sends you home happy.

THE SERVICE: THE REAL DIFFERENTIATOR
Good food is one thing. Good food delivered with warmth, precision, and genuine hospitality is another thing entirely — and that’s what sets Hales Blackbrick apart.
The food arrived at lightning speed. The staff was attentive, friendly, and professional throughout. But the real highlight? Chef Hales himself came out and personally visited nearly every single table. He wasn’t breezing past — he was actually stopping, talking, engaging. In an industry where chefs often hide in the kitchen, this kind of presence says everything about the culture of this place.
This establishment is clearly not cutting corners on staffing — and they’re investing in training people who genuinely care. You feel it from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave.

Cocktails ★★★☆☆ — Solid, but the food steals the show
“Drive the 40 miles. Drive the 80 miles. Just go.”
LOPA’S TIPS
Book your table as early as possible. If you can only get an early slot like we did, take it. The atmosphere is just as lovely when they open. And whatever you do, order the Panang Duck Curry and the Pork Belly. Non-negotiable.
