Do We Really Need to Celebrate Women’s Day?

For many years, I have refrained from writing about International Women’s Day. Every March, the internet fills with messages celebrating women—their strength, resilience, achievements, and contributions. While these sentiments are meaningful, I often find myself wondering: why do we need a special day to celebrate women at all?

On one hand, society rightfully talks about equality—about women being equal to men in every aspect of life. Women lead companies, run countries, raise families, innovate, create, and contribute to every field imaginable. If we truly believe that women stand at par with men, then shouldn’t respect and appreciation be a constant, everyday reality rather than something reserved for a single day?

Are we really equal????

There is a contradiction that’s hard to ignore. We advocate equality, yet we carve out a special day to highlight women—as though recognition is occasional rather than normal. If equality is the goal, then ideally women should be acknowledged and valued every single day, in everyday actions and attitudes, not just in social media posts once a year.

In a perfectly equal world, perhaps we wouldn’t need a Women’s Day at all. Respect would be woven into the fabric of daily life. Women’s contributions—whether at home, at work, or in society—would be seen as natural and expected, not exceptional.

Is there workplace equality?

And yet, reality reminds us that we are not quite there yet. Gender gaps still exist—in opportunities, pay, leadership representation, and even in everyday respect. In that sense, Women’s Day can serve as a reminder: a moment to pause and reflect on how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go.

So maybe the purpose of Women’s Day isn’t just celebration. Perhaps it’s reflection. Perhaps it’s a reminder that equality shouldn’t be symbolic—it should be lived.

Until the day comes when equality is so natural that no reminders are needed, the conversation will continue.

Why do need a particular day to celebrate women?

But personally, I still hold on to a simple thought: the day women truly stand equal in every sense, we won’t need a special day to celebrate them. Respect will simply be a way of life.

  1. What a beautifully written article, Lopa! You are absolutely bang on — Women’s Day should be a reflection, not just a celebration. I especially loved your ending… that respect should be a way of life. So powerful, so deep. Truly something we all need to keep working on.
Keep writing — I love reading your thoughts
